Gentle Road Church of Christ – North Central Regina, SK, Canada

For more information on this ministry, view this video.

The informal beginnings of this ministry were born in 2007 when Daryl and Kristin Steiner moved to Regina, and moved into North Central, an impoverished inner city community. The following year, they, along with Kevin and Lisa Vance, began a Christian club in the Steiners’ home. The humble beginnings of this group were only 6-8 kids on a weekly basis. After a year, the ministry grew to 25 kids.

In the fall of 2009, “The Party”, as the kids had begun to call it, moved to Wascana School. By June 2010, there were 84 kids at the wind-up, along with 40 helpers and 15 parents and grandparents from the community. God was on the move!

That fall, the Steiners and Vances began training with Mission Alive to plant churches in Canada. In May 2011, the church began meeting in the Steiners’ home on Sunday afternoons. The house church gathering varies in number, anywhere from six to eight people, up to 47.

By the fall of 2011, a weekly Bible study and prayer time began on Wednesday evening. In addition, there is a weekly addictions support group to help people struggling with alcohol, drugs and other addictions. Also in the fall, the church incorporated as the “Gentle Road Church of Christ Inc” in the province of Saskatchewan.

One of the highlights of our year takes place each summer. Mission 6:10 is a mission camp in the heart of Regina. Founded in 2010, this week of intense ministry focuses on the needs of the inner city in Regina, and connects people with their gifts and passions as they serve God and the community. In 2011, the projects we undertook were:

  • two Vacation Bible Schools
  • one middle school camp
  • one large mural (see above photo)
  • construction on people’s homes in the inner city
  • addictions workshops

We are grateful to God for our many partners, including the Northwest Church of Christ and the Glen Elm Church of Christ in Regina, as well as the Greenville Oaks Church of Christ in Allen, Texas, and many other congregations and individuals.

Kevin Vance writes, “God is overseeing each step of our journey. . . . We trust him and step through each door as he leads us and believe that, like Abraham, we are on a journey with God. . . .”

Iglesia de Cristo: "Un Lugar de Gracia"

Planters: Juan Carlos and Hortensia Bautista

Location: Grand Prairie, Texas

Public Launch: October 2009

carlos_and_hortensia_bautistaUnder the title, “ Following the Cloud of his Presence”, the city of Grand Prairie, TX celebrated a great event that gave birth to a new Spanish-speaking congregation of the Church of Christ. The celebration brought joy, hope, and great expectations. The concept was new and different. We call ourselves “church planters or organic churches”. We open our doors to the community, inviting them to celebrate the work of God in our lives.

In February 2009 my wife Hortensia, my daughter Elizabeth, and I, Carlos Bautista, initiated our ministry in this city where the majority of its population is of Hispanic origins. Our first months in the city we dedicated ourselves to investigate its environment, establish ourselves, and practically incarnate, or be part of the community where we arrived. The first contacts with whom we began our work were from our neighborhood, the grocery stores, parks, nutrition centers, schools, restaurants, and other places in the community. Wherever there was someone, we would tell them of our reason for our being in this city.

The Lord our God was and is good for opening doors of homes in which we are able to speak the Word of God. Later, we taught them how they were able to continue teaching the Word of God in the same manner we had learned. In March 2009 we started a small group, and even hosted our first event at a local Grand Prairie park. We rented it with the purpose of gathering the friends we had made. We had an outstanding result! We had friends arrive early and others late wondering if it really was a church at a park. There was 53 total including adults, youth, and children.

We have focused on bringing new friends to the small groups; later with the Word of God taking them to spiritual transformation through prayer gatherings, spiritual retreats, confession of sins, and a true repentance of sins. We seek the presence of God. We want our people to practice holiness and teach others to do the same.

 Wells_Family

Bret and Rachel Wells, along with their three sons, Conner, Micah and Josiah, moved back home to north Texas in October 2008 in order to work with the Christ Journey Church in Burleson. For nearly three years they worked alongside Chris and Heidi Chappotin and cultivated relationships throughout the south Fort Wort area. In May 2011, Christ Journey sent out the Wells, along with three other families, to plant The Gathering in another part of the community. You are invited to connect with The Gathering online via their Facebook page - www.facebook.com/thegathering.burleson.

Bret is currently finishing a Doctor of Ministry in Missional Church Studies at SMU (expected graduation, May 2012). He is the Director of IT and on the teaching faculty for The Academy for Missional Wisdom - a 2 year, non-degree program providing theological foundation and practical skills needed for starting and leading micro-communities of contemplative prayer and missional action. Bret is also the owner and director of Missional Monks - an organization committed to collaborating with and equipping others for missional life and leadership.

More information on The Gathering, Missional Monks and The Academy for Missional Wisdom is available at www.missionalmonks.com.
