Equipping Leaders in Discipleship and Mission

Mission_Training-no_frameNorth America is a mission field. The culture is increasingly post-Christian. Many churches are in-grown, plateaued or dying. God is calling the church to become a missionary community - entering into the world just as God in Jesus took on flesh and moved into the neighborhood.

Mission Alive’s Mission Training is designed to help churches follow Jesus into the mission field by equipping leaders in discipleship and mission as they plant new churches or pursue renewal in existing churches.

Mission Training is a two-year process, consisting of four, two-day Equipping Labs that occur every six months. Each Equipping Lab addresses the major topics related to planting churches or renewing existing churches:

  1. Cultivate: Personal Discipleship. God first wants to do in us what he wants to do through us. Equipping Lab 1 focuses on the leader’s personal spirituality and relationship to God as the foundation of mission. Content includes conversation about Christian identity, theology of spiritual formation, spiritual practices, confession, and the role of mission in personal discipleship. After this Lab, participants join Huddles, a weekly video conference call that provides ongoing equipping for their personaldiscipleship.
  2. Plant: Missional Communities. God’s mission spreads through the web of relationships found in neighborhoods and relational networks. Equipping Lab 2 focuses on how to plant Missional Communities in such contexts. Content includes conversation about theology of incarnation, reading the culture, missional community practices, and strategy for developing church structure.
  3. Equip: Disciple-Making Leaders. Missional leaders make disciples who make other disciples. Equipping Lab 3 focuses on multiplying leaders of a missional movement. Content includes conversation about creating a leadership development process, theology of service, coaching skills, and different types of leaders.
  4. Launch: Kingdom Movements. God uses movements of people to shape culture and impact the world. Equipping Lab 4 focuses on the development of “centers of mission” that serve as hubs for church planting and Mission Training. Content includes conversation about characteristics of movements, developing regional networks, and training network leaders.

  • months.
  • Integration of theology and practice. Equipping Labs integrate theological reflection and ministry strategy in four labs that focus on the major topics related to church
  • planting and renewal.
  • Accessible to everyone. Equipping labs take place on Friday and Saturday, allowing participants with full-time jobs to join us without having a major impact on their work.
  • Multiple points of entry. Church planters enter Mission Training by way of the Discovery Lab. Existing church leaders enter the process either through Dialogue, a half-day workshop that introduces the major topics of Mission Training, or Huddles, a weekly small group meeting via video conference that equips leaders in the rhythms of discipleship.
  • Supplemental online content. Our online system guides participants through readings and supplemental content related to each Equipping Lab. Church planters have access to online learning modules on the nuts and bolts of church planting, from fundraising to developing a prayer team.
  • Regular support and connection. Participants receive ongoing personal support in between Labs in the Mission Training process from certified Ministry Coaches, trained Spiritual Directors, and a weekly Huddle meeting.
